Yamaha R25
The Yamaha R25 has been one of those bikes that has generated lot of interest from the word go itself, when the R25 concept was showcased for the first time at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. It was the same scenario at the 2014 Auto Expo as the Yamaha stall was swarmed by Indian two-wheeler enthusiasts and now finally the production spec version has been unveiled in Indonesia. Yamaha hasn’t confirmed about its plan of launching the new 250cc bike in our market but ZigWheels has learnt that a pre-production model of the Yamaha YZF-R25 has already landed on our shores for testing and R & D purpose. So let’s take close a look at the Yamaha YZF-R25 and what it has on offer.
Let’s start with styling, one of the main reasons for the inquisitiveness about the R25 was its M1 inspired styling, the concept bike possessed. The Indian biker has a soft spot for a full-faired motorcycle and the R25 wouldn’t disappoint them on this front. The bike sports a neatly sculpted windscreen below which sits the twin lamp headlight. The lamps are divided by a small duct that gives the front an aggressive look. The fuel tank carries forward the edgy design language with subtle knee recess.
In profile, the bike looks bulkier than what it is in reality and can be easily passed off as a 600cc, supersport offering. The tail section is very minimalistic and sharp with the LED taillight being neatly integrated into it The Yamaha R25 gets equipped with a part-analogue-part-digital instrument console; it sports an analogue tachometer and a LCD screen that houses the speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge and other details. The instrument cluster also features a revv limiter light. The R25 employs a two-into-one exhaust system with a R6 inspired stubby muffler and Y-spoke wheels. Overall design of theYamaha R25 is pleasing and though the lines aren’t as sharp as the concept bike, it holds its own amongst the company of its quarter-litre rivals.
One of the highlights of the Yamaha R25 is its powerplant. The 249cc, parallel-twin, 8-valve, liquid-cooled motor pumps out 36PS at a heady 12,000rpm and torque rating stands at 22.5Nm at 10,000rpm. Power is transmitted to the rear-wheel via a six-speed gearbox. According to Yamaha, they have worked on the combustion chamber design to obtain better mixture of air and fuel thereby resulting in better combustion. The cylinder of the Yamaha R25 like all Yamaha twin-cylinder offerings has been built from DiASil (Die casting Aluminum-Silicon) construction, which apart from reducing the weight of the cylinder also improves heat dissipation.

Engine and Gearbox
Yamaha FZ1 is powered by a four cylinder, liquid cooled 998cc engine. This 4-stroke, DOHC engine pumps out a massive power output of 148 bhp at 11000 rpm while the torque production of this fuel injected engine is of 106 Nm which is achievable at 8000 rpm. This bike is equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox with a gear shift pattern of one gear down and five give gears up.
Acceleration and Performance
This is the segment which matters the most when you are talking about bikes like FZ1 and it seems to have an upper hand over its rival, CB 1000R. FZ1 has additional 25bhp which makes it more powerful than its competitor and helps it to get better power to weight ratio. The bike has an instant throttle response which indicates towards its serious power production. Within 3.5 seconds, you may reach the three digit mark on its speedometer. For high speed performance, you will notice its proportionate gear ratios which allow you to rev it hard even in small gears. Even at low rpms, there is not much need of frequent gear shifts. However, the refinement and calmness of this engine may not cross the benchmark set by Honda’s engine. You can sense the strain in this engine if you try to push it extremely hard. Gear transitions are also very convenient and delightful. The bike is built for high speed cruising and it does so in style and you can always cross the speed of 160km/hr without much drama. It’s certainly not the limit for this bike as it can reach the top speed of 200km/hr.
Mileage
With this bike, one can achieve a mileage of around 15km/ltr on long runs.
Comfort while Driving
New seat and upraised tank now brings the rider more close to the handle which increases the comfort level while driving this bike. The flat handlebar gives you a nice firm palm grip which is quite effective at slow speeds. Its clutch and gear levers are very light and easy to grip while its foot pegs allow your knees to fold at the right angle. The overall control over this bike is enhanced by the way your knees stick around its tank.
Storage Space and Safety Features
The bike lacks storage space but features vital safety features. It has a MOS X 64 calliper at its front which is very helpful while hard braking and you also get a powerful headlight for clear vision.
Suspension and Braking System
Yamaha FZ1 has beefy telescopic forks at its front while it features swing arm suspension at the back. As far as braking is concerned, it has dual hydraulic disc brake of 320mm at its front while it has a single disc brake of 245mm at the back. The rear brake is combined with a single-pot pin-slide calliper which effectively helps to stop this speeding machine.
Ride and Handling
With a wheelbase of 1460mm and fatty tyres, the bike delivers superb handling. Its suspension is quite able to hold it effectively at high speeds and it holds the road properly around corners. The bike takes any bump without complain and offers superior ride quality than its rival. High speed stability is the best thing about this bike and that can be experienced while you frequently change lanes. You always have control over this bike thanks to its perfectly mated suspension and braking system.
Tyre Size, Shades and Variants
Yamaha FZ1 sports 17 inch 5-spoke alloy wheels. It’s only available in one variant and white/black color.

VALENTINO ROSSI TEST All New YAMAHA R25 - 250cc (launching india)
Yamaha is all set to join the 250cc motorcycle segment by launching the R25 in India next year, to compete with the likes of CBR 250R and the baby Ninja. The Japanese manufacturer recently unveiled the M1- based R25 at the Tokyo Motor Show.
The Yamaha R25 will be twin cylinder, making it a premium 250cc, compared to its Honda and Kawasaki rivals. The twin cylinder motor will be liquid-cooled and use an advance fuel injection system. The R25 borrows its styling from Yamaha’s M1 MotoGP machine, making it one of the best looking quarter-litre motorcycles.
The motorcycle uses a tubular chassis with telescopic front suspension and disc brakes at both the front and rear. ABS might be optional.
It is still not sure if Yamaha would sell the motorcycle with a twin cylinder engine or a single cylinder one. Considering Yamaha aggressive approach with R15, it would be safer to assume that the R25 will be a segment leading motorcycle, in terms of performance, competing with the likes of RC390, Ninja 300 and the Daytona 250.
The R25 is expected to belt out 28-30 horses and priced between 2.5- 3 lakh rupees.
The new 2014 Yamaha R25 Concept will greet us at the fast nearing 2014 Indian Auto Expo next month.
Stay tuned to Motoroids for more updates on the Yamaha R25 concept and the Yamaha YZF-R25 production spec motorcycle.

Apache RTR 250 - TVS Draken Concept
The TVS Apache 250 is likely to be launched in the next 18 months and will draw heavy inspiration from the Draken. It will be a naked bike, weighing less thanks to the use of an aluminium trellis frame. This chassis is sure to give the Apache RTR 250 stellar dynamics. The 250cc, single-cylinder, 4-valve liquid-cooled engine showcased on the Draken outputs an unbelievable 38.50 PS of power and 23 Nm of torque, expect the same to be tamed on the Apache 250 with around 30 horses on tap.
TVS will continue to target the urban youth with the Apache 250 and the design will evolve from the current Apache. The Draken gets some interesting bits like a full LED headlamp with DRLs, active matrix digital console, bar end mirrors, ABS, petal discs, 120 mm front tyre, 160 mm rear tyre, offset monoshock, reverse free flow exhaust, race ergonomics, etc. Expect some of these features to make it to the Apache 250, which is likely to be priced under Rs. 1.50 lakhs.
The bike comes with a single cylinder engine having a displacement of 250cc, and capable of producing a power of 30bhp@9500rpm. The suspension in front of the TVS Apache RTR 250 consists of telescopic forks while the rear suspension would be somewhat rectangular swing arm variety.
